Pit Stop for tweens and teens

Natural, aluminium-free roll-ons for the in-between years, in scents they'll actually want to wear.

Somewhere around ten or eleven, the bathroom door starts getting locked. Showers get longer. Or suddenly much shorter, depending on the child. And then one morning you walk past their bedroom and think, right, we need to have the deodorant chat.

Our deodorant for tweens and teens is the same Pit Stop roll-on that's already sat on thousands of UK bathroom shelves. It's 98% natural and there's no aluminium, alcohol or parabens in it. We built it to deal with the smell, not to stop them sweating, and to be kind to skin that's only just started doing unpredictable things.

This page is for the in-between bit, probably the trickiest stretch to buy for. They need something that'll keep up with secondary school, but you still care a lot about what goes on their skin.

Pick a scent they'll actually use

Pick up any bottle and it's a 75ml roll-on. 98% natural, no aluminium, and underneath, the kids and adult ranges share the same core natural formula. So really you're choosing a scent. Oh, and how grown-up the bottle looks next to whatever their mates are using, which matters more to a thirteen-year-old than we'd like to admit.

Scent Range Who it tends to suit What it smells like
Very Berry Kids Younger tweens who want something fun Sweet and fruity
Original Kids Anyone after a clean, no-fuss smell Fresh and unisex
Coconut Kids Tweens who like a softer scent Light and tropical
Ocean Breeze Adults Older teens wanting something more grown-up Crisp and airy, made as a unisex choice
Cotton Fresh Adults Teens who want a “just washed” smell Clean laundry
Floral Blossom Adults Teens who prefer floral Soft and gentle

Loads of tweens are perfectly happy on Very Berry or Original and see no reason to change. Older teens are a different story. Once a kids' label starts to feel embarrassing, the adult scents give them somewhere to go. No birthday decides when. If you're weighing it up, our guide to switching from kids' to regular deodorant goes through the signs.

Whichever way you go, let them choose. Sounds minor. It isn't. A teenager who thinks their deodorant smells babyish won't argue with you about it, they'll just stop using it.

Why Tweens and Teens Start Needing Deodorant

According to the NHS, puberty usually begins between 8 and 13 for girls and between 9 and 14 for boys. Body odour tends to tag along. It rarely gives much warning either, so plenty of parents only clock it once their child already has, and is mortified.

None of that means they're not washing properly. It's just biology turning up, usually at the worst possible moment. Then secondary school stretches the day out with early buses, PE and clubs, so there are a lot more hours between the morning wash and getting home.

What to look for in a teen deodorant

Odour control first, obviously. If it's given up by second period, it's worse than having nothing for a twelve-year-old who already feels like everyone can tell.

Skin comes a close second. Underarms get touchy at this age and some kids react badly to alcohol-heavy formulas or strong fragrance, so we kept alcohol and aluminium out of Pit Stop altogether. It's paediatrician approved too. The odour side gets handled by Saccharomyces ferment, with a bit of aloe vera in there to soothe.

Deodorant or antiperspirant?

People mix these up all the time, and fair enough, they sit side by side on the shelf. An antiperspirant usually leans on aluminium to cut down the sweating. Deodorant doesn't touch that. It goes after the smell.

With most tweens and teens it's the smell that's bothering everyone, so starting with a deodorant makes sense. Is it more about soaked-through shirts? Then an antiperspirant might suit them better, and that's a fair call. Some families would just rather go aluminium-free, and we've gone into why on our natural aluminium-free deodorant page.

A few things that help it work

Clean, dry skin is the bit people skip. Straight after a morning shower is ideal, as long as they've actually towelled off and not just waved a towel in the general direction. Rolling it over yesterday's sweat is a losing battle.

Fabric hangs on to smell longer than skin does, so a fresh T-shirt for PE helps more than you'd think. And try not to make a thing of it. Leave the bottle in the bathroom. Let it be their idea.

FAQs

What is the best deodorant for teenagers in the UK?
Honestly, the one they'll actually use every day. For lots of families that ends up being a natural, aluminium-free roll-on like Pit Stop, partly because there are six scents across the kids and adult ranges to choose from.
Is aluminium-free deodorant OK for teenagers?
Yes. It tackles body odour instead of blocking sweat, and for most teens the smell is the real problem anyway. Pit Stop has no aluminium or alcohol in it, and it's paediatrician approved.
What deodorant should a 10 year old use?
Something gentle and alcohol-free that they can put on themselves without a fuss. At ten, a roll-on from our kids range in Very Berry, Original or Coconut is a common place to start.
What deodorant should a 14 year old use?
Whatever they'll put on without being nagged. Plenty of 14-year-olds want something that smells more grown-up by then, so Ocean Breeze, Cotton Fresh or Floral Blossom from the adult range is a natural next step. Still happy on a kids' scent? Leave them to it.
Is natural deodorant strong enough for teenage body odour?
For most teens, yes, though it works differently to what they might be used to. Pit Stop doesn't block sweat. It goes after the bacteria that make it smell. How long it lasts varies from person to person, and putting it on clean, dry skin makes a real difference.
Is Pit Stop suitable for teens with sensitive skin?
We made it with sensitive skin in mind. It's 98% natural, with nothing like aluminium, alcohol or parabens in it. With anything new, though, keep an eye on their skin for the first few days. Our deodorant for sensitive skin page goes into more detail.
Do teenage boys and girls need different deodorants?
No. Odour works the same way whoever's armpit it is. Pick by scent, not by the colour of the label. Original and Ocean Breeze are both made to be unisex.
